Burak Ozkosem and Amber Robson- Argentine Tango

Burak Ozkosem, El Turco is recognized for his creative and expressive style and his bold and sensitive interpretations of both traditional tango music and the eclectic, non-traditional music that he incorporates into his djing and instructional repertoire. He is a popular and attentive teacher. His current focus is to develop Tango Nuevo analysis methodology to understand and teach the essence of Argentine Tango more effectively to different populations in North America. Though he is considered a virtuoso of “Tango Nuevo”, in his dancing Burak is not adding anything new or “modern” to Tango. Every movement he uses is taken strictly from the Tango vocabulary. He respects the music and responds in the traditional places; his syncopa, or rhythm, is flawless. What he does is deconstruct the usual tango marcado (marking) and reconstruct it in his own surprising way. Burak’s nontraditional use of the vocabulary prompts curiosity, and inspiration for other dancers. He is the creator of prestigious Tango events,in North AmericaTango Joven Festival 2006-2007, Chicago Tango Week 2008-2009, Miami Beach Tango Marathon. He also co-founded the ARTango Center in Chicago. Although he is based in Montreal, Canada, he frequently teaches and performs in Miami, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Before discovering her love for tango, Amber Robson explored many diverse forms of dance, and performed for six years as a fire performer with the Fire Weavers. In 2009 she left Canada searching for a new experience and landed in Buenos Aires where she was first exposed to tango. She fell in love with tango immediately upon walking into Rudolfo Dinzels small studio in Villa Crespo and was moved and fascinated by the passion of the dancers. Rudolfo Dinzel and his partner Gloria are one of the most famous tango couples in the world. Amber began training regularly with Rudolfo and his students at this studio for seven months while dancing in milongas throughout the city and immersing herself in the culture – as the tango is not just a dance, but a philosophy and a lifestyle. Tango is normally danced in a ‘milonga’ on hardwood floors with specialised shoes, however, this years presentation at Lumière Festival will be created to reflect the natural surroundings. The performance will provide a glimpse of traditional and nuevo tango styles and the dancers are sure to inspire in the audience some of the passion and magic of the Argentine Tango.

Tine Rufaro Marimba Band

The Tine Rufaro Marimba Band is a local group of friends playing on Marimba’s, an instrument originating from Zimbabwe.

The marimbas are hand-crafted xylophones made from various hardwoods. The keys are fine-tuned to reflect the tones played in African music.

The music is from the Shona people of Zimbabwe and is upbeat and danceable and we invite everyone to dance and enjoy this
music with us!

We call our group the Tine Rufaro Marimba Band. We are  an eight member group based here in Ottawa (Barrhaven) that plays music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The band performs traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean music
on marimbas. Marimbas are a musical instrument made out of special wood normally found in Africa (Mahogany, or Paduak) or Rosewood here in North America.
We used mallets to play the Marimba which  belongs to the
family of musical instrument called xylophone (Balaphone).

Like the xylophone, the marimba is a set of wooden bars made of Mahogany, Paduak or Rosewood, mounted on a stand, with each bar having its own  resonator. This distinguishes it from the other mallet instruments which have bars made of metal.

Marimba is found almost everywhere in Africa as well as in South and Central America. Our kind of music is generally focused on Shona music
from Zimbabwe. In recent years, there has been a movement of marimba band/groups out of the Pacific Northwest that is spreading through the
United States and British Columbia. These western groups also focus on Shona music from Zimbabwe.

The music is upbeat, danceable, and family-oriented. The band usually plays using seven marimbas on two sopranos, three tenors, a baritone,
and Bass. We also have other percussion instruments called hoshos (gourd shakers) and African drums. We also sing and the songs are sung
in the Shona language the largest spoken language in Zimbabwe. The marimbas are hand-crafted xylophones made from various hardwoods. The keys are fine-tuned to reflect the tones played in African societies. Zvondai Muchenje the founder of  the band, makes the instruments right here in Ottawa with wood importered from Africa.

The group has played around Ottawa including  at the African Festival this year and last , Peterborough, and Kingston. We also play at private parties and fundraisers.
